It's time to make National Indigenous Peoples Day a national holiday

The NDP is calling on the Federal Government to make National Indigenous Peoples Day a national statutory holiday.

National Aboriginal Day is an opportunity to honour the many contributions Indigenous Peoples have made to this land and reflect on the many challenges they still face today.

Inspired by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's call to create a statutory holiday, this bill seeks to bring a sense of hope to Indigenous communities in Canada by honouring residential schools survivors, their families and their communities.

A statutory holiday would offer a public opportunity to better understand and ensure Canadians recognize our common history, and the legacy of the Treaty relationship which remains a vital component of the reconciliation process.
