MP JOLIBOIS COMDEMNS SENATOR’S PRAISE OF RESIDENTIAL SCHOOLS
March 9th, 2017 - 3:30pm
OTTAWA – Today in the House of Comons NDP Indigenous and Northern Affairs deputy critic Georgina Jolibois (Desnethé--Missinippi--Churchill River) stood to demand the federal government denounce the statements by Sen. Beyak in defence of the Residential School program and what she believes are the system’s “good deeds” that have gone unacknowledged.
“Mr. Speaker, Today we were sickened to hear the views expressed by Senator Beyak on residential schools.
Residential schools were profoundly damaging to First Nations and remain a dark chapter in Canada’s history.
Children were forcibly taken from their families and homes for the exact purpose of trying to wipe out their languages and their identities.
Will this government stand with us to condemn and denounce the statements made by Senator Beyak?”
