Georgina Jolibois Responds to Prime Minister Trudeau's Announcement in La Loche

LA LOCHE – NDP MP Georgina Jolibois (Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill River) is calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his Liberal government to do better for La Loche.
“The key take-away from the Prime Minister’s announcement in La Loche this morning was that he’s listening, but not hearing communities who know how to best help themselves,” said Jolibois. “There is a difference between just listening and actually hearing. The funding announcement this morning shows just how little the Liberal government is hearing what our community needs.”
Two years ago, the Dene High School submitted a proposal to the Federal and Provincial governments requesting $15 million dollars for community programs, mental health counselling, and renovations to the school. Wednesday’s announcement saw the Liberals invest $2.2 million over 5 years.
“The announcement is far short of what the community is asking for. It’s a bit insulting for the Prime Minister to say his government is listening when the difference between what they’re giving and what’s been asked for is so large,” added Jolibois. “I’m here every day helping my community and fighting for them. I’ll continue to make sure that La Loche and all of Northern Saskatchewan are respected by this Liberal government.”
Local medical professionals are also calling for further investment in mental health and addictions services, laboratory and coroner facilities, and a better system to recruit physicians, nurses, and paramedics.
