Member of Parliament Georgina Jolibois (Desnethé—Missinippi—Churchill River) issued this statement to mark Louis Riel day:

“Today I am proud to recognize and commemorate this important day. Louis Riel is rightly recognized as the father of the province of Manitoba and is celebrated for his advocacy for Métis rights and culture. He was executed on November 16, 1885.

I wish commemorative ceremonies taking place across the country well and I encourage all Canadians to attend events in their area to learn about Louis Riel and the Métis Nation.

Today the Métis Nation Flag will be raised for the first time in history on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. Earl Cook, President of the Jim Brady Local in La Ronge, Saskatchewan stated “today is an important day, Louis Riel inspires me and all Métis for time immemorial.”

As we celebrate the life, achievements’ and contribution of Riel and others, we shall continue to be inspired and work tirelessly towards a just and fair society for all. It is fitting that this day, November 16th, is now celebrated throughout the Métis Nation as Louis Riel Day.”
